About THE BOOK.
The world's first AI-Deep.Art based graphic novel
a collection of 11 short stories touring eastern Europe on motorcycle in the early-mid 90s. Just freed from the shackles of Communism, it was a lawless place of freewheeling adventure, inconceivable schemes, illegal gun markets, high stakes speed chess games with mobsters, activism and psychedelics, a blessedly short stint in a Russian jail, cross border drug smuggling, to being drugged and robbed, and ultimately coming to terms with my own conservative Jewish upbringing. The artwork, like the story, evokes the stark beauty and drama of those transient years when democracy in Eastern Europe was evolving and the author was simultaneously coming into his own as an adult.

The graphic novel is an industry first, with illustrations compiled from over 10,000 of my own reference photographs using a Neural Style Transfer ( deep learning artificial intelligence ) via the open-source Deep.Art neural network in Bethge labs. The assets were then cleaned up, hand composited and laid out in Adobe Creative Suite. The artwork, like the story it illustrates, evokes the stark beauty and drama of those transient years when democracy in Eastern Europe was evolving. In 1994, I left the Philadelphia scene to travel, play chess and create artwork in newly post-Soviet Eastern Europe. After travelling through western Europe, I headed to Prague, however unlike most of the 'expats' who ran off to the English-speaking “Paris of the 90s,” I found myself living outside of Prague and sinking deeply into Czech culture—and counterculture. Immersion is a collection of 11 short stories; ranging from cultural assimilation to illegal gun markets in romany ghettos, from playing chess with soviet mobsters to activism and psychedelics, from being incarcerated to sexual espcapades while motorcycling through war zones, and finally facing my conservative jewish upbringing at a concentration camp. While the book is based in the Czech Republic, the stories explore the cultural changes going on in early 90s in Slovakia, Poland, Bulgaria, Bosnia, Serbia, Ukraine and Russia. Sadly, many of these topics; war, corruption, mob-rules, xenophobia, and cronyism are still just as destabilizing today as they were 30 years ago. Neural Style Transfer
